Remote working - a global experiment? Not at Fullers Family Law...
February 2021 | Kirsty Sayers
March 23rd, 2020 is a date that will go down in history as the first UK lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic. Many businesses found themselves trying to adapt overnight, with a new and novel way of working.
Fast forward 10 months, a new year and we still find ourselves in the same position. The legal sector did not go unscathed, and just like other businesses, saw the impact of Covid-19. Scanning the horizon, we can see firms downsizing and offices shutting. In an article by Law.com International, 25 firms were affected in November alone.
So, what did this mean and still does for Fullers? In short, it’s business as usual. We were already a ‘paperless office’ and stored our files in the cloud. We operated and continue to do so throughout this pandemic, and we remained fully functional and available for our clients when they needed us. We were in a strong position to recruit lawyers and continue to do so.
It has certainly not been without its challenges. However, we came together as a team virtually. Working in our home offices, or from our dining room tables. Our flexible approach meant that home-schooling children was achievable, and our four-legged friends were happy as they had more walks than usual.
Occasional remote working has always been a benefit that Fullers has offered. We realise the benefits it can have, such as improved work-life balance and higher engagement levels.
With our up-to-date client systems and dedicated in house IT specialist, we were equipped to deal with long-term remote working rapidly.
We also understand that remote working for a considerable time can take its toll.
It has been an emotional time for our staff and our own families, and it does not look like it is ending soon. To ensure we are in the best position to help our clients, we launched an employee assistance programme for added support. We have completed engagement surveys, made sure our staff meetings continue, and we are committed to weekly training and strategy sessions to engage all roles within the team.
As the saying goes, all work and no play. At Fullers we have virtual coffee catch-ups for much needed social space. We are ready to host our next virtual quiz this week and we continue to look for more ways to keep us together and happy in this very strange time!
We are a forward-thinking law firm that leaves an out-dated approach at the (virtual) front door.
