How to Fill in a Form C2

 May 2025

A Form C2 is used in family court proceedings when a person wants to seek permission to apply for an order, request directions from the court in existing proceedings, or ask to be joined as a party to the proceedings. It is commonly used by individuals who are not automatically entitled to apply for certain types of orders, such as grandparents seeking contact with a grandchild.

This summary provides general information and does not constitute legal advice on any individual circumstances.

Because the Form C2 covers a wide range of requests, it is important to be clear and specific about what you want the court to consider. You should explain exactly what you are asking for and why, including any relevant information or documents in support. If you already have parental responsibility, this should also be stated as it means that you will not need the court’s permission to make the application. This helps ensure your application is understood and dealt with efficiently by the court, which then has all necessary information to make an informed decision.

Taking time to prepare the form properly can help avoid unnecessary delays.

Completing a Form C2

The first section of the form asks for the name of the court and the case number if there is already a case in progress. If you are applying to join an existing case, this information will be listed on the paperwork you have received.

You then need to give your full name and contact details, along with those of any other parties involved. You must explain what you are applying for and why you are making the application. This part of the form is especially important as part of the court’s consideration of the merits of the application.

If you are asking the court for permission to make an application, you must state clearly why you believe this is necessary and why it would be in the best interests of the child or children involved. If you are applying to vary an order or be joined as a party, explain the reasons for your request and how it relates to the ongoing proceedings.

Depending on the type of application you are making, you may need to include additional documents. For example, if you are seeking permission to apply for a Child Arrangements Order, you may need to include a draft Form C100 outlining the proposed arrangements.

You may also need to complete a confidential contact details form (Form C8) if you do not want your address or contact information to be shared with the other party.

Do You Need to Pay a Fee?

In many cases, submitting a Form C2 will require a court fee. The amount depends on the type of application you are making. If you are on a low income or receiving certain benefits, you may be eligible for help with the fee through the Help With Fees scheme. The Form C2 should not be submitted without payment or evidence of a fee remission application, or it may be returned.
