Living with Narcissistic Abuse

Are you living with narcissistic abuse? You may not realise that your partner’s behaviour is narcissistic. You can be lulled by your partner into believing that their actions are normal and that you are the one who is “out of line”.

Many people who live with narcissistic abuse assume that help is not available unless their partner is violent towards them, with medical evidence of physical abuse. That is not correct. The court widely defines domestic abuse as including psychological or emotional abuse and economic abuse as well as coercive and controlling behaviour.

Separating from a Narcissistic Abuser

It is not surprising if you feel overwhelmed or you do not know where to start in your journey to separate from your narcissistic partner and make a new life for yourself and your children. Our family solicitors can advise you on:

  • Separating from a narcissistic partner –unless the situation is urgent, you should not leave the family home without first taking legal advice. That is because a family solicitor may be able to secure an occupation order to enable you to stay at the family home until a long-term agreement or financial court order is made.

  • Applying for injunction orders – in addition to applying for an occupation order you may also need a non-molestation order to prevent further narcissistic abuse.

  • Applying for an order that your children live with you and that if the children have contact with your partner that the access arrangements are in the children’s best interests. This type of children law order is referred to as a child arrangement order.

  • Divorce proceedings and the divorce process

  • Financial claims – sorting out a financial settlement on divorce with a narcissistic partner can prove extremely challenging as they may use money as a means of control and the support of a family solicitor can be invaluable as you look to secure the long-term future.
